In the summer of 2020, Katy and Paul Eyer were excited to welcome their first child, Ruthie, but the timing was difficult with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although everything looked good during pregnancy, Katy had a condition called placenta previa, which led to a C-section. After Ruthie was born, she had trouble breathing, and doctors suspected she might have Down Syndrome or another condition. She was quickly transferred to UC Davis Children’s Hospital for further care.

Expert Care and Support Help Ruthie Thrive and Grow

At UC Davis, Ruthie was diagnosed with Down Syndrome and a heart condition that needed surgery. She had a procedure to fix her heart before she was six months old, which is important for babies with this condition. The doctors and nurses worked closely with the family to help Ruthie, and the Eyers felt confident in her care. Over time, Ruthie got stronger, thanks to the help of many specialists, including those at the MIND Institute at UC Davis.

Parents Encourage Other Families to Trust in Specialized Medical Care

Now 4 years old, Ruthie loves swinging, playing with her brother, and reading books. Her parents are thankful for the care Ruthie received at UC Davis and say it helped her grow and develop. They encourage other parents to trust the experts, just as they did, and are amazed by how far Ruthie has come.
