As many of you know first hand, fetal MRI images can sometimes look a bit…spooky. Suzanne Debari, a registered diagnostic medical sonographer at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, recently spoke with the Today Show to break down the imagery and answer the question – science or science fiction?
Debari, who leads CHOP’s fetal ultrasound team, explained that the “otherworldy” look isn’t specific to unborn children. “I could show you an adult MRI and it would look just as scary. It’s almost like we’re slicing a loaf of bread, and then picking up the slice and looking at it,” she adds. Debari explained that ultrasound images can often have a “ghostly” appearance as well and that MRI and ultrasound are often used together to create a more complete picture of the fetus.
